The story behind our first candle — vetiver, smoked oak, and the long thin candle our grandfather burnt every January.

Our grandfather kept a candle on his windowsill for the month of January. Not for any reason he ever named — except that the room was warmer for it, and the smell of vetiver carried the whole way from the front door.

The wax

This is not a quick candle. The blend is roughly half local rapeseed wax (from Burgundy) and half coconut wax. Each pour is finished by hand, and the wax is left to cure for two weeks before the wick is trimmed.

The scent

The scent is built around a Haitian vetiver oil, layered with smoked oak and a quiet base of suede leather. There is no top note. The fragrance opens slowly, the way light moves into a room in winter.

The vessel

The cup itself is thrown by Atelier Vinieres outside Saint-Amand, in stoneware that fires to the colour of unbleached linen. When the candle is finished, the cup makes a good vase for short-stem flowers.
